What was life like during the Great Depression?

Visit the Timeline of the Great Depression and answer the questions that follow.  Access the worksheet below to answer these questions.

1.  What is the nickname used for the infamous day the stock market crashed in 1929?
2.  What did many desperate people resort to selling in order to make money?  How much did these items cost?
3.  What was a "food riot"?  Why do you think people started these?
4.  Which bank caused the largest bank failure in the nation's history?
5.  Who was elected President in 1932 defeating Herbert Hoover in a landslide?

 

Go to the New Deal website and answer the following questions.  Access the worksheet below to write your answers.

1.  What was the New Deal?  Who created the term "New Deal?"
2.  Much of the New Deal legislation came during the first ________________ of Roosevelt's administration.
3.  Identify the following New Deal programs and the purpose of each: FERA, FDIC, NRA, and AAA.
4.  What was the purpose of the Works Progress Administration (WPA)?
5.  Why did the New Deal programs begin to lose support?
