1.  CWP IV is an introduction to the major literary movements in British Literature.  This course is geared toward students who plan to attend a two-year technical school or enter the workplace upon graduation.  Special emphasis will be given to practical writing, speaking, and communication skills as well as developing more sophisticated critical reading and thinking skills.

2.  The AP English Language and Composition course is offered in the junior year to students who have already completed Honors English III.  Students have the opportunity to earn three hours of college English credit if they pass the exam in May.  Students can earn a score of 0-5; most colleges require a score of at least 3 to give college credit.  However, some colleges may require a score of at least a 4 to give college credit.  Be sure to check with the colleges you hope to attend about their AP policy.  The Language course differs from the AP English Literature course offered in the senior year in that Language focuses on the use of rhetoric and style to convey meaning in writing, speaking, and communicating.

3.  Classroom Rules and Procedures

Entering the classroom:  Please do not come into the classroom and immediately ask to leave.  Once you come into the room, you must stay and take your seat.  I should not have to ask you to be seated when the bell rings.  You are tardy if you are not in the classroom when the bell rings.

Leaving the classroom:  Walk.  Do not shout.  Do not crowd by the door.  You need to stay seated until I dismiss you.  Note: I dismiss you, not the bell.

Restroom:  You may use the restroom during class three times per semester.  Otherwise, you will stay after-school if you choose to use the restroom.  In order to go to the restroom, you must have your agenda for me to sign as your pass.  Only one person may use the restroom at a time.  You may not use the restroom while I am teaching.

Lockers/Cars:  You may not go to your locker or car during class.  You must always bring all of your materials with you.  Even on a day when I am checking binders/notebooks, you will not be allowed to go to your locker to get it.  Part of your responsibility is remembering to bring your materials to class.

During class:  In addition to my four posted classroom rules, I expect you to follow these procedures:

1— You will listen to me when I speak.

2— You will always raise your hand before speaking.

3— You will not touch any property that is not yours.

4—You will not use obscene or threatening language.

5—No food or drinks are allowed in the classroom.

6— Always bring your textbook and binder with paper and pens/pencils.  You may not store your belongings in my room; if you do, it will go in the trash.

Discipline:  If you repeatedly fail to follow the classroom rules, here is the discipline breakdown:

1st offense: verbal warning and phone call home

            2nd offense: 30 minutes after-school detention

            3rd offense: office referral

I reserve the right to skip to a referral or ask you to leave class in the case of severe misconduct.  During your after-school detentions with me, you will be given work to complete; it will not be a time for you to do homework for other classes, sleep, or stare off into space.  Do not make excuses; simply follow the rules.

Make-Up work / Being Absent:

If you are absent, you are still responsible for turning in assignments on time (unless you have made prior arrangements with me).  When you come back, it is your responsibility to ask me about make-up work.  I will not hunt you down.  BHS policy allows you 5 days to turn in late major assignments.  I will deduct 10 points per day the assignment is late.  If you were absent, do not ask me for any answers to any work we may have completed; you must do your own work.  After you try, I will be happy to help you.  When you return, check the folder for your block to pick up any missing work.  Being absent does not mean you do not have to turn in assignments or that there is no late-work penalty! The only exception is if you have made prior arrangements with me or you have a valid excuse.
