You have found the web page of Mrs. Jamie Gregory, English teacher at Byrnes High School. For the 2010-2011 school year, I will be teaching AP English Language and Composition (year course).
I graduated from Dutch Fork High School (Irmo, SC) in 1999. I earned Bachelor's Degrees in English and French from Wofford College in 2003 (I graduated summa cum laude and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society as well as the honor societies for French and English). Then I went on to complete the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree from Converse College in 2005. I taught English and French for one year at Spartanburg High School before coming to Byrnes for the 2006-2007 school year. I am certified to teach both English and French at the secondary level, and I also earned certification for the AP Language course through Furman University
For the summer of 2010, I have mostly been working on my Master's of Library and Information Science. I took two classes this summer, Young Adult materials and Children's materials. I read TONS of books, and I think I found some great young adult books that my students would really enjoy. We also managed to go to the beach and to visit some family in Maryland. I am very sad not to be teaching newspaper this school year, but I am excited that there will be three full classes of AP Language! It will be an adventure, that is for sure.
In July of 2009, I was chosen to attend the Reynolds High School Journalism Institute in Reno, NV! I was one of 175 teachers chosen out of 541 applicants to attend this two-week course. I learned a lot about student journalism, First Amendment rights, and the changes journalism is currently undergoing because of technology and the economy. I enjoyed spending time out west (especially at Lake Tahoe!) and I can't wait to get started on Spotlight!
I traveled to Washington, DC during the summer of 2008 with Mrs. Kim Kotecha to attend a conference, the Intensive Journalistic Writing Institute. The purpose was to learn how to combine teaching AP English Language with teaching journalistic writing techniques. It was such a wonderful experience in so many ways, and I cannot wait to go back!
