Course Syllabus: Color Guard
Mr. Chris Moss
Second Period: 9:47-11:28
James F. Byrnes Band room
The color guard class offers instruction for all members of the Rebel Regiment color guard. Instruction will include movement basics, equipment basics on flag and rifle, performance observation and analysis, and basic design and choreography.
The goals and objectives of the color guard class will be met through instruction on a daily level and through larger units of study.
Daily objectives: Each day the students will work on basic movement and equipment skills through fundamental studies and through working on the repertoire for the marching show.
Large Units: Students will learn about larger concepts through concentrated study throughout the semester. Time spent on these subjects will depend on the level of interest and depth of material. A few potential study areas include:
Performance observation and analysis – Instruction will include viewing and evaluating both live and taped performances.
Basic Visual Design and Choreography – Instruction will include a survey of visual art forms and discussions on shape, color, and movement. Students will do a series of assignments leading up to a final project that will include design and choreographing their own visual production.
Color guard students will be responsible for all materials, both school-owned and individually owned that they use. Each student will need to provide and maintain for use in performances their own rifle and or sabre. The band will provide flags and other implements and proper care of all equipment is expected.
Grades will be based upon class participation, including bringing all materials to class, and upon assignments relating to the larger units of study.
